Etymology: [ 'slEt ] (noun.) 13th century. According to Skeat, the author of Etymological Dictionary of the English Language, it is from Old Norse origin - slydda: das engl. sleet hält SKEAT für ein Lehnwort aus dem skand. und vergleicht norweg. sletta (Skeat considers the english sleet a loanword from Scand.) (whence Danish slud); akin to Middle High German sloz (German Schloße).
