Etymology: [ -jE ] (noun.) 14th century. Middle English ethimologie, from Latin etymologia, from Greek, from etymon + -logia -logy.

Etimoloji (asıl, hakiki, gerçek + söz, kelime) ya da kökenbilim, bir dildeki sözcüklerin kökenlerini ve bunun bir gereği olarak o dilin diğer dillerle ve o dili konuşan toplulukların geçmişten bugüne diğer topluluklarla olan kültürel ilişkilerini araştırır.
