Etymology: [ bO-n&s ] (noun.) 1773. From Latin bonus (“good”). Because Latin has gender, this would mean "a good man (male)". Properly formed, the word should be bonum (neuter gender; the plural would be bona), meaning "a good thing". This would mirror the many other neuter gender words adopted into English, like maximum, minimum, premium, optimum. See also bona fide.
